Mt. Rainier standing at 14,410 feet, looms  over Seattle and Tacoma in Western Washington. It is the famous feature in any cityscape of these two cities as it seems to rise out of nowhere to float on top of the clouds.

However, this state's icon is also the nations most dangerous hazard. It lies in the Cascade Range characterized by its Stratovolcanos and made immortal from the 1980 Mt. St. Helens eruption. These volcanoes do not erupt often, but when they do, it can be catastrophic for the entire area. Mt. Rainier is potentially the most dangerous in the region due to the large amount of ice and snow covering its flanks and the large population who live in its lowland areas IV.
