Semeru is located on the eastern side of the island of
Java in Indonesia.

Semeru is part of an island arc that makes up the
islands of Indonesia. This arc is created by the
Indo-Australian plate subducting under Sunda plate just
to the south west of Java.5 The trench in the image
above marks the location of the subduction zone.
