Race

My first correlations deal with the issue of race. I chose this correlation first because I thought that it would be the easiest to find a correlation. The first correlation is between the total number of AIDS cases and the percent of the population that is African American. I thought that there would be a correlation between these two because in the State of New Jersey African Americans represent fifty six percent of all AIDS cases. I was right. The percent of the black population has a correlation coefficient of 0.62, this is higher than my given confidence level. A correlation coefficient higher than the given confidence level means that there is a strong correlation between the African American race and the AIDS rate. The “X” and “Y” plot show that a positive correlation is present because the tread line is pointing upwards.
My next correlation is between the total number of AIDS cases and the percent of the population that Caucasian. I thought that there would be a correlation because white people represent the next largest group of people who contract AIDS. In the State of New Jersey white people represent twenty two percent of all AIDS cases. The percent of the white population has a correlation coefficient of negative 0.66. A negative coefficient means that when the white population increases the total number of AIDS cases decreases. I think that this is very interesting. I think that they have a negative correlation coefficient because they have the money to get the best medical attention possible to combat the virus.
