Carbonate Minerals

Carbonates are good examples of minerals with anisodesmic bonds

Ca[CO32-] (example of CO3 radical in carbonate mineral)
CO32- (triangular coordination polyhedron)

ev = 4/3 which is greater than ½ the valence of the anion

Subgroups within the Carbonate Group of Minerals:

Ionic substitution within the Calcite Group is dependent on ionic radii.
Dolomite has a 50/50 mix of Ca and Mg. It is structurally different from calcite in that it has alternating Ca-rich and Mg-rich layers
