This web page has been constructed by the students in a First Year Seminar at Colgate University, Fall ’03. The course examines the various sources of energy in use today, the history of their development and the prospect for use in the future. It focuses, especially, on the projections for availability of petroleum and the energy sources that may be utilized increasingly as petroleum becomes scarce. In particular, we have addressed the use of coal, nuclear energy and renewable energy sources with an eye to how much demand can be met by each and the environmental consequences associated with them. The course has been augmented with trips to wind, hydroelectric and nuclear power-generating stations and a trip to the coal mining regions of central Pennsylvania. |
