Solutions

It is necessary to examine some general information found up to this point. In the United States, blacks are eight times more likely to contract AIDS then whites. Furthermore, the leading cause of death for black females ages 25 to 44 is AIDS, not to mention this group is also 23 times more likely to contract the disease then the same age group of white females (Out of Control). It would appear that these statistics are right on with those calculated for the Syracuse area, as the densely populated black area codes have staggering AIDS rates. In 13202, the AIDS rate is nearly five times the national average, at 1,472 cases per 100,000 people. Area codes 13203, 13204, and 13205 all have AIDS rates above 500, so the whole general area has a problem which needs a solution. Finally, the 13210 area code, home to Syracuse University, only has an AIDS rate of 358. However, this data is misleading, due to the size of the University’s student. When the student body size is factored out of the population for the area, the real AIDS rate for the area is closer to 750, which makes sense because the area is home to the gay community. It is nearly impossible to solve the AIDS problem in every area code of Onondaga County; however, focusing on the areas listed above would drastically contribute to the reduction of and education on the disease.
