The AIDS epidemic in Manhattan has mainly spread due to male-to-male sex (MSM) and intravenous drug infections (IDU); in Harlem, IDU appears to be the most common mode of transmission. Within Harlem, zip codes 10029 and 10035 show particularly high rates of IDU transmission, it compromises 53% and 55% respectively of all infections. When looking at correlation rates, IDU and Black infection rates show a significant correlation with a value of |0.820| (³|0.553| represents a significant correlation). In these zip codes the Black population is infected at a higher rate than both the Hispanic and White populations, the infection rate in 10029 is 4670 per 100,000 and in10035 it is 6470 per 100,000. Compared to the national cumulative AIDS rate of 1117 per 100,000 for the Black population, the New York rate shows that it is a problem that needs to be addressed. |
