PERCENT OF POPULATION THAT DOESN'T SPEAK ENGLISH
I thought that the percent of population that cannot speak English would correlate positively with high AIDS rates as this shows that there is most likely indicates an immigrant population. Immigrant populations have a 50% higher poverty rate than native born citizens and 31% do not complete a high school education (8). As indicated previously, low income has a strong positive correlation with high AIDS rates. However, I was again mistaken as the correlation was -0.12, which is insignificant at 95% confidence. By looking at the scatterplot, it is difficult to identify outliers as the points seem extremely random. After removing what appear to be the outliers of Dover at 7.33% and Passaic at 11.22%, the correlation coefficient is less significant and meaningful with a value of -0.098. Dover and Passaic are both urban centers of their respective counties, Morris and Passaic. Because they are metropolitan areas, more jobs are available and thus those who are unable to speak English are more apt to find work in these environments. The data for this was collected through Summary File 3 of the US Census tables PCT62A-G. The two variables, however, appear to be completely unrelated.
