In order to verify the relationship between education and AIDS, one would calculate correlations between various levels of education within different races to the cumulative AIDS rate. One would discover the strongest correlations are between AIDS rate and the percent of White females with a High School diploma (Chart 8) and between Hispanic females with a Graduate or Professional Degree and AIDS rate (Chart 9). It should be noted, however, that the only college in Somerset County is Raritan Valley Community College; this college is located in Somerville, which has the highest AIDS rate in Somerset County.
These results prove there is a very strong connection between women staying school to pursue their academic career and a low AIDS rate. Since there are strong correlations between AIDS rates and high levels of education, one would expect there to be a correlation between AIDS rates and lack of education. When calculated, there is a correlation between AIDS rate and the percent of African American men who did not graduate High School (Chart 7). While these correlations do show there is a relationship between education and AIDS, one would also discover that many calculations did not meet the correlation coefficient needed to be a significant correlation. For instance, the correlation between AIDS rate and percent White female with a professional degree is only -.394, and the relationship between percent Hispanic males with no high school diploma is merely .294.
Aside from these insignificant correlations, there is apparent relationship between school and AIDS, which would lead one to believe there is a relationship between AIDS and unemployment. Since African American men with no High School diplomas relate to high AIDS rates, it is reasonable to assume unemployed men will also relate to a high AIDS rate. It is not known, however, if those unemployed are not working by choice or for reasons our of their control. Ultimately, when calculated, both unemployed men and unemployed women strongly correlated with AIDS rate. In fact, the women have a stronger correlation (Chart 6) than the men (Chart 5).
The above graphs and maps prove there are strong correlations for all sexes between AIDS, education and unemployment. These results reveal that more time spent pursuing academics and a career relate to a lower AIDS rate. |
