Carrolup Inspired Art Gallery

As part of our unit on Race in Sociology, my students examined a case study of Australia's Stolen Generation. In addition to reading the personal histories of Noongar elders and watching Rabbit Proof Fence, we examined some art from the Carrolup School in Western Australia. While Carrolup artists reflect the importance of land in their magnificent drawings, I asked each student to draw something that was intimately related to their own identity. As in the tradition of Carrolup, many drew landscapes; however, one student chose to design a plate and another a pattern. Such design work was also part of the Carrolup artistic tradition.
