MARKET FAILURES

1)Vail's request for an additional 1000 acres from White River National Forest to add to its existing permit boundaries in order to facilitate the connection of virtually every ski resort in the I-70 corridor.  This would include aerial tramway connections as well as actual slope expansion, in addition to other plans to interconnect the resorts.  This would prove to be disastrous to the indigenous wildlife population and increase the already large amount of congestion stemming from increased tourism.

2)The draft plan for Vail's expansion would virtually double logging efforts thus taking away vital habitats for animals.  The deal supposedly proposes a plan for habitat-protected areas, but then allows limited logging to occur within those areas.   Obviously, this is harmful to the existing environment.

3)The Forest Service plan protects less than 16% of roadless lands(47,200 acres)  in the park while citizens are requesting 300, 000 acres of additional wilderness.  Under the plan, more than half of the existing roadless areas would be lost to commercialization.

4)The Forest Service plan to Vail's expansion does not effectively control the use of motorized vehicles, such as A.T.Vs. and snowmobiles in roadless areas.  While it is the only proposal of its kind in Colorado, it does not go far enough to protect the environment.

In addition to the above market failures, there are more which are under examination by the U.S. National Parks Service.  More will be listed as they develop.
