Denali National Park and Preserve was first established in 1917 as Mount McKinley National Park. Denali, as it was later renamed in 1980, was the first park designed specifically for the purpose of wildlife protection. The park's total acreage is approximately 6.5 million, and is located 240 miles north of Anchorage and 140 miles southwest of Fairbanks.
