Guagua Pichincha Activity Updates:

  • 10/26/00 (18:44 GMT) – Another eruption occurred today at 13:31 local time.  A cloud of ash rose to approximately 2.5km above the crater floor.  A strong wind from the southeast distributed very small amounts of ash as far away as 30km from Guagua Pichincha.
  • 10/27/00 (15:22 GMT) – No eruptions occurred today.  Protests against USGS involvement continue in the streets of Quito.
  • 10/28/00 (04:56 GMT) – There were two eruptions in the past 24 hours (23:32 & 03:11).  Each saw a plume rise to 2km above the crater floor.  At 03:56, a M5.0 earthquake rocked the mountain. 
  • 10/29/00 (15:15 GMT) – One eruption this morning was the only activity.  Ash rose to 1000m above the crater floor.  New gas data was just received and saw an increase in emissions.
