March 27, 1957
"...one of the most bizarre of campus mysteries."
"Egg Reappears after Hectic Weekend", The Colgate Maroon. March 1957
|
In March 1957, two Colgate students (class of '58) stole the dinosaur egg from a glass
case in Lathrop Hall. Campus security, Hamilton police, Madison County sheriff, State Police,
and the FBI were called in to investigate. The Dean announced in a mandatory all-college
meeting that: (1) he had warrants to search every room on campus if the egg was not returned
immediately and (2) it would be a felony if the egg crossed state lines. The egg was
returned surreptitiously to the Catholic priest's house in Hamilton, where it was kicked
off the doorstep and discovered in the bushes a few days later. The egg has resided since
then in the university vault (it survived the fire that destroyed the Old Administration
Building in 1963), and the alumni perpetrators have asked to remain annonymous.
