SOLIFLUCTION

Occurs when a surficial permeable layer is underlain by an impermeable layer. Very common in areas of permafrost where the ground below remains frozen even though the surface thaws in the summer. Also occurs in areas underlain by shallow clay layers or bedrock.

Because water connot penetrate deeper, the surface layer becomes saturated with water resulting in

  • added weight and
  • decreased friction between grains (less material strength)

Solifluction is characterized by LOBATE structures over an entire hillside
