A specific example of an oil spill in a Georgia salt marsh demonstrates the effect
of oil on some animal life. In this particular case it was found that the populations
of fiddler crabs, oysters and mussels did not change to a noticeable degree. All living
Periwinkles were killed, but their larva remained and later recolonized.
Interestingly, there was surge of mud snails that migrated to the marsh to scavenge
other dead snails. (Graphic: http://www.assateague.com/berm.html )
