Although the County is commonly known for its small affluent towns, it is also home to a variety of larger urban areas, such as Norwalk, Stamford, and Bridgeport. These metropolises, along with several other smaller towns, suffer from a slew of debilitating problems often associated with urban life, such as poverty, substance abuse, and lack of education. The most troubling of these problems, however, is the recent spread of HIV/AIDS throughout the region. Indeed, within the past ten years new crises of infection have developed in the intravenous drug users, and the African American and Hispanic populations of Bridgeport (the hardest hit city in Fairfield County). Although the question may once have been, what do we do with these new cases? the time has passed for thoughtful query.
