DATA AND STATISTICS

As you can see in Table 1 the AIDS prevalence rates in Alameda County are above the national and statewide rates. Alameda, Berkeley, Hayward, Oakland and San Leandro all have rates higher than the national rate. Specifically, the rate for Oakland is drastically higher than any other rate in the county. The AIDS rate for Oakland is over three times larger than the national rate. These rates demonstrate that the city of Oakland and Alameda County as a whole currently have a major AIDS epidemic.

Table 2 demonstrates that the male and female percentages of cumulative AIDS cases. The percentages in Alameda County and Oakland match with the national and state percentages. The similarity in these numbers show that overtime the disease has not affected men and women differently in Alameda County and Oakland than in the rest of the United States.

Table 3 shows the manner in which people with AIDS through out the years have contracted the disease. Numbers for Alameda County and the United States are separated into male and female but Oakland numbers are male and female percentages grouped together. This table reveals that in Alameda County a higher percentage of males contracted AIDS from other males during sexual contact than the national percentage. With females the modes of transmission percentages are very similar although a higher percentage of women contracted the disease from heterosexual sexual contact in Alameda County than nationally. The difference in these numbers could be accounted by the high percentage of unreported mode of transmissions for women on the national level.

Table 4 shows the national, Alameda County and Oakland populations and AIDS cases broken down by race. By examining these numbers and percentages one can see that in all three demographics African-Americans have a disproportionately high number of AIDS cases compared to their percentage of the population. In the United States and Oakland African-Americans have near double the percent of AIDS cases than their percent of population and most alarming in Alameda county their percent of AIDS cases is nearly triple their percent of the population. Other minorities like Hispanics and Asians have disproportionately low number of AIDS cases compared to their percentage of the population. These numbers reveal that within the U.S., Alameda County and Oakland African-Americans are currently facing a major AIDS epidemic.
