AIDS in Indiana County

Project Two: Correlations

Sexually Transmitted Disease Rate Correlations

I also considered that there could be a correlation between AIDS and STD rates, so I did some research and dug deep into the resources available from the Pennsylvania Department of Health.[13] I found statistics on the county level for numbers of Gonorrhea, Chlamydia, and primary and secondary Syphilis cases each year, compiled these into a compound list of sexually transmitted disease cases from 2000 to 2005, and determined the STD rate per 100,000 people for each county (Table 7; Map 5; Map 6).  There was a strong positive correlation, as expected, that was enormously reduced in significance when Allegheny County was removed from consideration (Graph 5; Graph 5a).
