Mode of Transmission

How AIDS is Transmitted
One way in helping to determine how the virus is infecting individuals and what group of people are most at risk is to study the data regarding the mode of transmission. In the table below I found the percentages for the United States and Montgomery County for male-to-male sexual contact (MSM), Injection Drug Use (IDU), and heterosexual contact.

The data for both the United State and Montgomery County indicate the primary route of transmission is Male-to-male sexual contact. This information indicates that the AIDS virus is most likely to be prevalent among gay men who participate in this type of risky behavior. The next most common mode of transmission for the United States for males is the injection drug usage, but for females it is heterosexual contact. Similarly in Montgomery County, heterosexual contact is the second most common mode of transmission, but the data did not allow for a distinction between men and women. Finally injection drug therapy is the least common mode for Montgomery County, yet this percentage is doubled in men of the United States. Clearly the primary group of people that need to be targeted when understanding this data is that group of men who engage in male-to-male sexual contact.
