Urban Renewal

New burgh, NY is inhabited by (get number ). Of this number ( so and so are black). This city has experienced marked tensions between its white and black communities. One of these was with the proposed urban renewal that was to occur in downtown Newburgh. The idea was to demolish all old and dilapidated buildings in order to build new ones. The residents of the older set of buildings were to be relocated until new housing was available for them.

The project officially began in July of 1970 and the area of interest was Water street,  a traditionally black neighborhood. In total around 500 families were displaced, forced to find housing wherever they could. After demolition a plan to rebuild and funding were supposed to quickly follow. It took years for the city to build anything in the areas that were cleared out and none of them are for former residents.  Still to this day there are large empty areas of the city that nothing is being done with.
