Neighborhoods “to avoid” when exploring the city of Cleveland often have high levels of crime and poverty. Two specific categories of crime present themselves in the Cleveland area: violent crimes such as homicides and rapes and property crimes such as robberies. Neighborhoods with a high percentage violent and or property crimes are assumed to be more impoverished and therefore more prone to HIV/AIDS and AIDS.

In considering violent crimes, the correlation coefficient of AIDS rate and rate of homicides per 100,000 are .3854, and.4452 for the HIV/AIDS rate. At a 95% confidence, both of these number are statistically significant.

The correlation coefficient between rapes per 100,000 and the rate of HIV/AIDS is .3526; however the AIDS rate correlated with a confidence under 95% with the rate of rapes (a correlation coefficient of .3281) but still had significant connections(4) .
The relationship between the percent of property crimes and AIDS or HIV/AIDS rates is stronger than that of violent crimes. Robberies per 100,000 had correlation coefficients of .4183 and .4830 respectively which indicates a higher than 97.5% confidence for both coefficients (4) .
