Outliers
Although most of the correlations were not affected by removing one coordinate from their scatter plots, the two
zip codes that consistently had the greatest effect were 11370 (East Elmhurst) and 11101 (Long Island City). Not
surprisingly, these two are home to the highest cumulative AIDS rates in the borough. Long Island City is also the location
of Queensbridge Housing, which is the largest public housing development in the United States (10). The crowded housing
takes in many of the lower income residents in Queens and lower incomes are correlated with a higher incidence of
diseases in general. East Elmhurst similarly includes some areas of impoverished residents although the community itself is
somewhat more diverse than that of Long Island City. It is possible that East Elmhurst is the home of many men who
consider themselves “on the down low.” (11)
HIV correlations in contrast to AIDS, did not exhibit nearly as much change when potential outliers wereremoved. A plausible reason was that there was not as much of a difference in the range of HIV rates compared to
AIDS rates.
